Resolution: A Unique Lounge Chair Design by Shaobo Liu

A Blend of Comfort, Portability, and Aesthetics

Resolution is a lounge chair designed by Shaobo Liu during his junior year in college. What sets this chair apart is its unique combination of size, weight, and design. Despite being primarily made of cardboard, the chair is able to comfortably support a person's weight. Even if crafted from wood, the chair would remain lightweight while maintaining its sturdiness.

The design of Resolution is unlike anything seen before. Its minimalistic aesthetic and narrow base contribute to its overall lightness, making it suitable for various design concepts. The chair's versatility allows it to be used in any space, and its portability enables individuals to place it wherever they desire.

The realization of Resolution involves the use of cardboard, foam, packing peanuts, and tape. These materials, combined with Shaobo Liu's innovative design, result in a chair that is both lightweight and durable. The dimensions of Resolution are 1473mm x 1549mm x 1066mm, providing ample space for relaxation.

Shaobo Liu's research and experimentation played a crucial role in the development of Resolution. He spent considerable time sketching and refining the shape of the chair, aiming to create a lightweight design capable of supporting at least 200 pounds. The use of clay as a medium allowed him to visualize and refine the chair's form. By scanning the clay piece and making adjustments in 3D software, Shaobo Liu was able to create a design that could be cut into pieces using a CNC machine and assembled later on.

Building the structure of Resolution proved to be a significant challenge. Shaobo Liu had to ensure that the chair could support maximum weight while minimizing its own structural weight. Additionally, mass production of the chair presented its own set of difficulties. However, through perseverance and creative problem-solving, Shaobo Liu overcame these challenges and successfully brought Resolution to life.

Resolution has garnered recognition and acclaim in the design community. In 2023, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Resolution's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world have earned it this esteemed accolade.
